Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, built in 1901, is a bank and manager's house located on Attercliffe Road in Sheffield. It is designed in the Renaissance Revival style, featuring red brick with ashlar and granite dressings, and a hipped slate roof with two coped side wall stacks.
The exterior includes a plinth, rusticated corner pilasters, modillion eaves, and a balustrade with pedestals. The building stands three storeys plus attics and has a four by three window arrangement. On the first floor, there are three plain sash windows with double keystones, and above them, three smaller sashes, all with projecting surrounds. A box dormer is situated above. The slightly projecting portico at the entrance is supported by two granite Doric columns, flanked by pilasters and an entablature. It features three round-arched openings with voussoirs and enriched keystones, with two 2-light casements on the right, adorned with scrolled wrought-iron guards. On the left, there is a pair of glazed doors with round-headed lights and oval toplights, along with wrought-iron gates. To the right, there is an entrance bay to the manager's house, which has an oval first-floor window with a keystone and a set-back bay with a plain sash above. The entrance below features a moulded ashlar doorcase with a scroll keystone and a segment-headed half-glazed door with an overlight. Above the door, there is a small plain sash. The left return of the building has fenestration identical to the front, but with three ground floor windows.
Inside, the largely original interior includes a banking hall with a heavily enriched cornice and a cross beam ceiling. The windows are moulded round arches with scroll keystones, and those on the left return feature etched glass. There is a panelled wooden counter with fluted columns topped with grotesques, and segment-headed glazed screens behind it. The interior also contains three pedimented doorcases with pulvinated friezes and panelled doors, as well as an elaborate wooden internal porch with glazed double doors and four oval mirrors.
