Description
The Britannia Public House is a house that has been converted into a public house, dated 1772, with alterations and additions from the mid-19th century and early 20th century. It is constructed from colourwashed brick, featuring a rendered left gable and a steeply pitched slate roof with four gable stacks, one of which is external, along with a single lateral stack. The building has three storeys and a two-window range, following a double range plan.
The front features two 20th-century casement windows with splayed lintels, and above them are two 12-pane sash windows. At the base, there is an early 20th-century single-storey addition with a wooden pilastered front and a blocking course. The central window has a smaller Tudor arch, flanked by single three-light windows, and to the right, there is a set-back door. The right gable displays the date 1772 in raised brickwork. A two-storey addition to the right includes a 20th-century two-light casement and below it, two four-pane sashes.
Inside, the public bar has been refitted in the mid and late 20th century. Historically, this building was the home of Benjamin Huntsman, the inventor of crucible steel making, and it is likely that his first commercial workshop was located at this site.
