Description
No. 5 Birch Road is a building that was originally the manager's house for the Attercliffe steam corn mill, now serving as a snooker club. It dates from around 1805 and has undergone alterations and additions in the mid and late 20th century. The structure is made of ashlar and brick, with some areas rendered, and features stone dressings along with gabled and hipped slate roofs, which include a single gable and a single ridge stack.
The building has a plinth, first floor and sill bands, moulded eaves, and a blocking course. It stands two storeys tall and has a five-window range. Most of the windows are late 20th century glazing bar casements. In the center, there is a three-light window flanked by smaller single-light windows. On either side, there are canted two-storey bay windows with three windows on each floor, with the lower windows being taller. Below the central three-light window, there is a moulded stone doorcase to the right, which has a blocked overlight and a shaped fielded six-panel door. The right gable is rendered and coped, featuring irregular fenestration. To the left, there is a set-back brick addition that is also two storeys high and has a two-window range. The interior has not been inspected.
