Description
The Atlas Works Offices, originally known as the Queen's Works offices, were built in 1853 as part of a steel works. The building has undergone mid-20th century alterations and was partly demolished and refurbished in the late 20th century. It was constructed for the steel manufacturers Armitage, Frankish & Barker. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features gabled and hipped slate roofs with various stacks.
The exterior includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and a moulded wooden gutter and eaves band with modillions. The building is two storeys high and has a 20-window range. On the left side, there is a narrow bay with a single plain sash window on each floor. To the right, there is a single bay with a coped parapet and a round-arched plain sash window. Further right, there are four similar round-arched windows flanked by brick pilasters. Additionally, there is a segment-headed war memorial panel and a segment-headed glazing bar window. The main range features 18 glazing bar sashes on the first floor and 18 segment-headed windows below, all with wooden frames.
Historically, the buildings were purchased in 1856 by John Brown and renamed the Atlas Works. They were part of the Firth-Brown industrial group, which was a pioneer in the manufacture of cheap bulk steel in Britain, producing steel rails and armour plate. The building was vacant at the time of the survey.
