Description
The North West Lodge, gateway, and boundary wall at City Road Cemetery in Sheffield were built between 1878 and 1881 by ME Hadfield & Son. This entrance lodge is designed in the Tudor Revival style and constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The lodge is two storeys high and has a T-plan layout with a single window range. It features a plinth, moulded coped gables, and a large lozenge-shaped coped ridge stack. The openings have label moulds, and the gabled wing facing the drive includes a single 8-pane sash window on each floor. In the left return angle, there is a Tudor arched door. The main gable to the left has a stone mullioned 2-light window with 8-pane sashes, and below it is a canted stone bay window with a coped parapet and similar fenestration. The interior has not been inspected. The adjoining gateway features two octagonal ashlar gate piers topped with ribbed ogee domes and finials, along with a pair of wrought-iron gates. To the west, there is a Tudor arched doorway with a label mould. The boundary wall extends approximately 400 meters and has double chamfered coping.
