Description
The remains of the Manor House, built around 1510 for the Earls of Shrewsbury, are located on Manor Lane in Sheffield. The structure was demolished in 1706 and later restored around 1910 and in the late 20th century. The ruins consist of coursed rubble, dressed squared stone, and brick, and the building is now roofless. It has a rectangular plan running north-south, with the kitchens situated at the south end.
A massive restored ashlar stack features a square shaft and crenellated top, with a fireplace on each floor flanking it. The south wall has a blocked door on the left, flanked by single blocked windows, and to the right, there are four additional blocked openings. To the left of the stack, part of a rectangular range stands to two storey height, with various openings. To the right of the stack is a courtyard containing brick vaulted cellars below, and on the east wall, there is an unrestored square stack with a fireplace on each floor.
The west wall includes the base of a polygonal turret on the right, alongside three basement rooms. To the left, the west wall of the long Gallery has four blocked 4-light transomed lancets. At the north end, there is a polygonal tower featuring a fireplace and a garderobe on the east side.
