Description
The Roman Catholic mortuary chapel of St Michael, built between 1898 and 1900, is located at City Road Cemetery in Sheffield. Designed by C Hadfield and funded by the Duke of Norfolk, this chapel is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features plain tile roofs, showcasing the Gothic Revival style.
The exterior includes a plinth, sill band, and buttresses. The hexagonal chancel has two single lancet windows on both the north and south sides, topped with a hexagonal lantern that features a larger single lancet on five sides and a round-arched trefoil window to the west. Both the chancel and lantern have hipped roofs, with the lantern crowned by a cross. The single-storey square sacristy has a coped parapet and a large square external corner stack with an octagonal flue, with single windows to the north and east, and a stone doorcase to the south that is blocked. The nave has a coped west gable with a finial, three single lancets on each side, and a graduated triple lancet in the west gable. The central west porch features a similar coped gable and finial, with a moulded round-arched double door.
Inside, the chapel has a hexagonal arcade under the lantern, with moulded pointed arches and hoodmoulds. Above the west arch is a round window, and the east end has a moulded segmental pointed recess. The nave features a lath and plaster groin vault with moulded wooden ribs and tie beams. The west end has a round cornered chamfered doorway with double doors. At the time of the survey, the building was vacant.
