Description

Victoria Chambers is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from around 1800. The building features ashlar and stucco construction with a hipped slate roof and a single brick ridge stack. It stands two storeys tall plus a basement and has a window arrangement of four across the top floor and three on the bottom. The north front is made of ashlar, with a rusticated basement and upper floors that are divided by Ionic pilasters. The first floor has four 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has four 9-pane sash windows. The ground floor includes four 12-pane sashes with round heads, and the basement has two openings fitted with metal grilles.

The entrance front, which is stuccoed and located to the west, features bands at the first and second floors and a recessed centre with a single window. This central window is a 12-pane sash, flanked on the left by another similar sash and on the right by two more. Above this, there are three 9-pane sashes. The ground floor is highlighted by a central Ionic portico with fluted columns and half-glazed double doors topped with a fanlight. To the left and right of the portico, there are additional 12-pane sashes. At the rear of the building, there is a domed octagonal stair turret.

Inside, the building features a panelled elliptical arch and cornice in the hallway, along with a half-glazed screen and sidelights. The doorcases are corniced, and there is a circular stone staircase. Notably, the Sheffield Hospital for Women was established in this building in 1864.
