Description

The County Court Hall, dated 1854, is located on Bank Street in Sheffield. It features ashlar stonework and a hipped slate roof with two coped stone stacks on the sides. The building has a plinth, a rusticated ground floor, and quoins, along with dentilled cornices at both the first floor and eaves, and a sill band at the first floor. It stands two storeys high with a basement and has a five-window range. The windows are margin light sashes, with the first-floor windows having moulded surrounds and bracketed cornices; the central window is pedimented and arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern. The Royal Arms are displayed in Coade stone in front of the central window. The ground floor is arcaded, featuring a heavy impost band and round arches with rusticated heads and keystones, with three round-headed windows in the center. At each end, there is a slight projection with a round-arched doorway that has a moulded eight-panel door and a plain fanlight. The left return has a pedimented blank above and a round-headed window below, while to the left at a lower level, there is a parapeted block with a plain sash above and a round-headed window below. The basement includes a blocked door on the left and three square openings on the right. Inside, there is a cantilever open well stone stair with a cast-iron balustrade and a ramped scrolled handrail. Court 3 features moulded plaster wall panels and cornice, window cornices, and a crest above the bench. The building has undergone mid and late 20th-century alterations.
