Description

This building is a collegiate school, later adapted as the main building for Sheffield Hallam University. It was originally constructed around 1836 and raised and extended in the same style in 1911, designed by J.G. Weightman. It is built of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, in a Tudor Revival style.

The building consists of a central hall flanked by two-storey wings. The front has a plinth, a sillband to the ground floor and crenellated parapets. The central hall has a projecting gable to the south, with flanking buttresses and coped octagonal finials. It features a traceried four-light Perpendicular lancet window with a transom and hoodmould, flanked by niches with crocketed finials. Below is a four-light mullioned and transomed casement, flanked by two-light windows. The returns of the wings feature similar two-light windows above and three-light windows below. The plain north gable has a gabled bellcote.

The lower right wing includes a central projection with a crocketed gable and octagonal finials, with a four-light cross mullioned window above and a canted stone oriel window below. Further windows on this wing are arranged as cross mullioned and three-light examples. The left wing is of similar design, and includes a segmental pointed doorway. The right return, which serves as the entrance front, has a three-light mullioned window under a crocketed gable with finials. A central pointed arched doorway features a label mould and enriched spandrels, with a mullioned overlight above. Flanking this doorway are three-light mullioned windows, all with label moulds. The interior of the building was not inspected as part of the listing process.
