Description

Hardwick Grange Farmhouse is a mid-19th century farmhouse constructed from horizontally-tooled red sandstone, topped with a 20th-century cement-tile roof. The building is two stories tall and features three bays across the front with a lower wing extending to the rear right. It has a plinth and large chamfered quoins. The central bay is recessed and flanked by smaller quoins, leading to stone steps that access a 20th-century panelled door with a margin-light-glazed overlight set within an architrave. The outer bays contain ashlar bay windows, each with 15-pane sashes that are unequally hung beneath a swept ashlar roof.

On the first floor, there is a pierced miniature balustrade across the central bay, which supports a round-headed French window in an architrave set within an ashlar panel. The flanking sashes have glazing bars and are framed by architraves with blocks to moulded sills. An eaves band runs along the top, and the hipped roof is adorned with two corniced ashlar ridge stacks. The left side of the building features sashes with glazing bars set in cavetto-moulded architraves, with paired 8-pane sashes in the first bay.

Inside, the farmhouse retains a contemporary staircase and fireplaces, including one made of Derbyshire fossil limestone. This is a well-detailed and elaborate example of a farmhouse from its period.
