Description
The Mews is a stable-block and coach-house associated with Morthen Hall, dating from the mid 18th century, with an added coach-house likely from the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed, dressed sandstone and features a 20th-century cement-tile roof. The building is a single range with the coach-house located to the right.
It stands two storeys high and has a total of six windows on the first floor. The stable block on the left has a plinth, large projecting quoins, and sill bands. There are four round-arched, quoined doorways, each with panelled and part-glazed doors (the second bay has a fixed door), and fanlights with radial glazing bars. To the right of each door, there is a four-pane casement window, with two in original square-faced surrounds and the others in altered openings. Above each door, there is also a four-pane casement window, all set in square-faced surrounds. The building features an eaves cornice.
The coach-house on the right has flush quoins and two rebated, segmental-arched carriage entrances, which include a central pier and renewed boarded doors. Above each arch, there is a two-light mullioned window. The roof is continuous, with shaped kneelers and gable copings, and includes four 20th-century rooflights and two stone ridge stacks. On the left return, there is a 20th-century two-storey bay-window projection with square-faced mullioned windows, a cornice, and a hipped roof. The Mews is included for its group value with Morthen Hall.
