Description

Oak Cottage is an early 19th-century barn and cottage that has been converted into a house, situated adjacent to Morthen Hall on its southwest side. The building is constructed of deeply-coursed, squared rubble sandstone with a renewed pantile roof. It is two storeys high and comprises five bays. A quoinstrip is visible on the left end. The windows are largely 20th-century casements with leaded lights. A 20th-century stone porch has been added in front of the central bay, with single-light windows flanking the entrance door. The left-hand bay has a 4-light window set within an infilled segmental-arched opening. The fourth bay features a quoined, segmental archway now containing garage doors, with a 3-light window to the left and a renewed 2-light mullioned window with a dripstone to the right. The first floor has a 3-light casement window in each bay. The roof has kneelers and square-cut gable copings. An eaves stack is located to the right of bay 4, and a ridge stack is located to the right of bay 1. The left return has a plinth and quoinstrips, with a 20th-century bay window flanked by small oculi on the ground floor. A round-arched recess on the first floor features a moulded sill and flanking oculi. An eaves band runs along the top. The building is included in the listing for its group value.
