Description
The stable block and coach house, located about 200 meters south of Oakley Hall, is likely from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features plain tiled hipped roofs. The building is roughly 'U'-shaped, with the stable block arranged around three sides of a courtyard and a detached coach house at the top end.
The stable block has two stories in the main range, characterized by a dentilled eaves cornice and a stone floor band. There are single-storeyed ranges at right angles to the east and west, with the front displaying five bays in the center forming a slight pedimented break. The first floor features glazing bar sash windows with horns, with the central three having narrow round-headed arches. The ground floor has 20th-century fixed light windows set in the original openings. A central carriage entrance has a wide elliptical arch, topped by a wooden round-arched cupola with a lead roof and brass weathervane. There are four ridge stacks, two on each side of the entrance. At the rear, two hexagonal stair turrets flank the entrance. The single-storeyed ranges have late 19th and 20th-century openings; the west side has five late 19th-century alternating doors and windows, while the east side features wide 20th-century cart entrances in place of the doors.
The coach house has two levels, with a four-bay elliptical-arched arcade at ground level that includes original iron-strapped double doors. The upper level has four lunette windows and a dentilled eaves cornice. There are tallet steps to the rear on the right, made of engineering brick. Inside, the west range of the stable block contains 19th-century cast iron stables.
