Description

Audley's Cross Farmhouse and its attached ranges of farm buildings date from the 17th century, with remodeling occurring in the late 18th or early 19th century, along with later additions and alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick, primarily in stretcher bond, and features plain tiled roofs that are hipped, with ball finials on the slightly projecting taller square corner pavilions. It is two storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The façade consists of one bay, three bays, and one bay, all fitted with 20th-century casements. The central section on the ground floor has projecting windows, and there are hipped half-dormers above. A blocked round-headed arch is located in the left-hand corner bay, and there is a brick ridge stack to the right of the middle bay of the central section. The entrance is a 20th-century addition in the left of two parallel two-storeyed ranges that are at right angles to the rear.

Inside, the central room on the ground floor features a chamfered cross beam with run-out stops and chamfered joists. There is also a good late 18th-century staircase with slender turned balusters and a ball finial on the newel post. The attached ranges of farm buildings include a cowhouse at the rear on the left and a cartshed with a granary above at the front on the right. Both of these structures end in square corner blocks that have hipped roofs and ball finials, matching the style of the farmhouse. The farm buildings are arranged around a cobbled farmyard, creating an unusual complex that is unified by the square pavilion-like corner blocks.
