Description

Hales Hall is a country house dating from around 1790, with extensive additions made in the mid-19th century. The building is stuccoed on a sandstone plinth and features hipped roofs, with late 20th-century concrete tiles on the 18th-century part and slates on the 19th-century additions. It has ridge stacks and the original section is symmetrical in the Adam style, complemented by Victorian additions and a service block to the west.

The south (garden) front has a layout of 1:5:1 bays, with full-height three-window outer bows. The glazing bar sashes on the ground floor extend to ground level. The central three windows, which are approached by two steps, are flanked by a giant order of four Doric columns and topped with a plain pediment. There is a moulded eaves parapet. The right-hand return features five bays and includes a mid-19th-century canted bay with a tripartite window to the left on the ground floor. The 19th-century additions to the west mimic the earlier work, consisting of four bays with a full-height three-window bow in the second bay from the left, glazing bar sashes with horns, a wide floor band, and a moulded eaves parapet that ramps down from the 18th-century part to the east.

A service wing projects two bays at the south-west corner, with a laundry located behind it. The entrance front on the north side has a layout of 2:1:3 bays, featuring a central Doric portico that forms a loggia to a recessed doorway, complete with a cornice adorned with mutules. The interior has not been inspected. Originally, the 19th-century additions included a castellated Gothic parapet, which was removed in the early 20th century.
