Description
The ha-ha located approximately 100 metres to the west of Sandbeck Park is a Grade II listed feature, constructed around 1771-73. It is likely designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for the Earl of Scarbrough. The structure is made of coursed magnesian limestone rubble and consists of a dry-stone retaining wall that is topped with an overhanging course. This wall serves as a division between the parkland and the gardens of Sandbeck Park. The ha-ha is set in a curve, extending approximately 100 metres west of the house, and it turns at a set of steps to continue south-west. At one point, it forms a bastion before meeting with the woodland. Historical records, specifically a labourer's wage book, indicate that much of the construction work on ha-has around the house took place during the years 1771-73.
