Description
The Limes is a gamekeeper's house built around 1760, likely designed by James Paine for the Earl of Scarbrough. It is constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is two stories high with a three-bay central section and one-story, one-bay side wings, the right wing having an additional storey. It features a plinth and rusticated quoins. The central bays project forward and include a round-headed sash window with glazing bars set in a rusticated surround, topped with a large keystone. This is flanked by round-headed recessed panels with projecting sills that are higher than the sash window. On the first floor, there is a blind oculus with a keyed architrave, flanked by unequally-hung nine-pane sashes with wedge lintels, and a pediment with a plain tympanum. Each side wing has a sill band beneath a round-headed sash with glazing bars and an eaves cornice. The left wing has a hipped roof with a brick end stack, while the right wing features a horizontally-sliding sash with glazing bars in its added upper storey. The central part of the building is flanked by stacks with decorative bands. At the rear, there is a central door with a blind fanlight that has radial glazing bars, similar to the front sash, and six-pane sashes in the flanking bays, along with an oculus flanked by casements. Historical records indicate that James Paine's bill refers to the alteration of a stable into a Keeper's Lodge, which is believed to be this building.
