Description

The central block of cottages, located immediately to the north of Home Farm, dates back to around 1760 and has been altered over time. It is part of a row of cottages designed in the style of James Paine for the Earl of Scarbrough. The building is constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone and features a Welsh slate roof.

This two-storey structure has a three-bay central section that has undergone significant alterations and extensions in the 19th century, which have diminished its special interest. The central block includes a plinth and rusticated quoins. There is a rusticated round arch with a keystone that has been infilled and now contains a casement window, with flanking casements on each floor. The second-floor casements are positioned beside a central glazed oculus that features a keyed architrave. The building is topped with a cornice and a hipped roof, which is flanked by corniced end stacks. The design of this block is similar to the gamekeeper's house known as The Limes, which is also attributed to James Paine.
