Description

THORPE SALVIN HARTHILL ROAD SK58SW (north side, off) 5/89 Sundial approximately 5 metres to south-east of porch to Church of St. Peter

GV II

Sundial. Probably C18 refixed on plinth dated 1841. Ashlar limestone. Small 3-step plinth surmounted by Tuscan column supporting abacus and square-sectional sundial with ball finial. Plinth bears inscriptions on each face: 'No Security against/death'; 'I stay on no Man/Repentance may be too/late and so may mercy/to'; 'All things inward/Approaching their/Appointed end'; 'No Wicked Man/is happy/ 1841'. The abacus is inscribed: 'Worldly Glory/So is life/May(?) present glory/ is the way of safety'. The sundial has a carved face on each side, no gnomons remain. Projecting band beneath ball finial.
