Description
40, 41, and 41A Hallgate is a house that has been converted into three premises with shops and offices. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is finished in stucco with painted stone dressings and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has seven bays arranged in a 1:5:1 pattern, with a pediment over the central three bays.
The ground floor has late 19th and 20th-century shop fronts that span the entire width. The shop on the left has a fixed small pane bow window and a recessed glazed door framed by pilasters and topped with consoles. The two central shop fronts feature a deeply recessed lobby with a moulded elliptical arch at the back. A continuous band on the first floor acts as a sill band for five central full-height unequal 15-pane sash windows, each with a simple semi-circular ironwork balcony. The central sash is set in a moulded architrave with a crested cornice on moulded consoles, while the flanking sashes have raised keystones. Smaller 12-pane sashes with keystones and projecting sills are located on either side. Above, there are seven 6-pane sashes, all with projecting sills, with the central one set in a moulded architrave. The building is topped with a moulded stone cornice and a pediment that features a central decoration of a laurel leaf circle.
Large brick ridge stacks are positioned on either side of the five central bays. Number 41 includes a central staircase at the rear with a thin column on a vase baluster and a wreathed mahogany handrail, along with six-panelled doors in architraves.
