Description
The Hall Gate United Reformed Church is a non-Conformist chapel built in 1804, originally independent before joining the Congregational Union in 1864. It was enlarged and substantially altered in 1874, with some later alterations following. The building is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared stone, with ashlar and polished granite dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof.
The chapel is two storeys and has a three-bay by five-bay layout. The front projects and has a deep, moulded plinth with steps leading to a pair of elaborately panelled central doors, each with a three-pane overlight. These doors are set within roll-moulded polished granite surrounds, contained within a pilastered ashlar doorcase featuring scrollwork at the base, carved consoles supporting a frieze with triglyphs and medallions, and a shallow opening with a projecting sill. An entablature with a moulded cornice is topped by a parapet with moulded copings and balustraded panels. The first floor has rusticated quoins and three tall, semi-circular headed, margin-glazed sash windows in pilastered surrounds with archivolts and radiating voussoirs. An entablature includes a triglyphed frieze with guttae and a modillioned cornice. A balustraded parapet sits above, flanked by square end piers with moulded cornices. A central panel is inscribed 'Congregational', flanked by paired pilasters with moulded cornices and blocking courses. The west side elevation has five fixed 12-pane windows to both ground and first floors, each with an incised wedge lintel, and a plain first-floor band.
Inside, the entrance hall features stick balustrade staircases to either side. The church itself contains a curved gallery with a panelled front supported by thin iron columns. A full-height segmental arch leads to a half-domed chancel bay, flanked at gallery level by moulded, semi-circular headed doorways. The roof has an arched braced structure. Original features include panelled pine pews and a pulpit.
