Description
The railings and gatepiers at the south end of Christ Church in Doncaster were built around 1844, likely designed by William Hurst, the architect of Christ Church itself. The structure features iron railings and ashlar stone gatepiers arranged in a U shape with gatepiers at the ends and corners. The gatepiers are square, with moulded plinths and panelled sides that have cusping at the tops, topped with stepped domed capitals and decorative brattishing. The railings are set on a chamfered stone plinth and consist of round bars with spearhead finials, plain rails at the top and bottom, and standards placed approximately every 20 feet, made up of a circle of similar bars. Every fourth bar and the standards are supported by bases resembling 'buns'. These features are included for their group value with the church.
