Description
The upper terrace retaining wall with an attached garden house is located on the west front of Hickleton Hall and is likely from the mid-18th century, with early 20th-century concrete additions. This structure was originally listed as part of the outbuildings to Hickleton Hall, which includes garden houses, walled terraces, and garden sculpture.
The retaining wall stands approximately 3 meters high and features a set of concreted central steps that are flanked by seven recessed panels. At each end of the wall, there are slight projections that contain two additional panels. A deep band runs beneath the coped parapet, adorned with festooned concrete urns. Concrete obelisks are positioned on either side of the central steps. At the north end of the terrace, the garden house is characterized by Ionic pilasters and a pediment topped with acroteria, and it includes a niche that holds a bust.
