Description
Flash House Farmhouse and the adjoining cottage are located on Lane Head Road in Cawthorne. The farmhouse was built in 1729 and restored in 1986, while the cottage is likely older but has undergone significant alterations. The farmhouse features coursed squared stone with quoins and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay facade. The central doorway has a plain surround and a raised keystone inscribed "R/J A/1729". Above the doorway, there is a cross-window at an intermediate level. A band runs between the floors, and the farmhouse has three-light flat-faced mullion windows, except for the ground-floor right window, which has been replaced with two four-pane sashes in plain surrounds. The gable ends have copings on moulded kneelers and ornamental ashlar end stacks.
The adjoining cottage is slightly set back and features a slender, lower bay to the left with a doorway, and a wider gabled bay to the right, which has three-light windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a blocked two-light window in the gable apex. All windows have square surrounds but recessed chamfered mullions. There are later and altered additions to the left return and rear of the farmhouse.
Inside the cottage, there is a fragment of timber framing that may be reused, consisting of part of a truss, part of a post, and sawn-off arcade plates.
