Description

The Rock Well, located approximately 50 metres west of Dam Head Cottages in Bretton Park, dates back to 1685 and was commissioned by the Right Honourable Grace Countess of Eglintown, widow of Sir Thomas Wentworth. It may have been remodeled in the 18th century. The well is constructed from ashlar and built into the rock face, featuring a slightly convex shape.

Its design is symmetrically arranged, with a central door that has a deep lintel, flanked by paired, engaged columns topped with fluted capitals. These columns support a simple entablature, which includes fragments resembling vases or pedestals, a sculpted limestone owl, and a central square tablet that is inscribed with the date and details. Stone steps lead down to the well from three sides.

This well was previously listed twice, with the duplicate record removed from the List on 5 December 2018.
