Description

SE21SE WEST BRETTON PARK ROAD (south side, off)

8/95 Bridge over the Cut - (east end) in Bretton Park.

GV II

Bridge. Probably early to mid C19 for Col. Thomas Richard and Diana Beaumont. Ashlar. Hump-backed bridge of 3 round arches, the centre one the largest, each with a small moulding and decorative frieze. Triangular cutwaters. Vermiculated panels at the springing of the arches and similar oval panels in the spandrels. A band decorated with a Vitruvian scroll motif forms the base of the parapet. The original vase-balustrade has been replaced by a simple steel railing, though the intermediate piers survive. At each end the bridge splays to terminate in squat octagonal piers each surmounted by a large urn with a fluted base of gadrooned cap.
