Description
The bridge over the Cut at the east end in Bretton Park is a structure likely built in the early to mid 19th century for Colonel Thomas Richard and Diana Beaumont. It is constructed from ashlar and features a hump-backed design with three round arches, the center arch being the largest. Each arch has a small moulding and a decorative frieze, with triangular cutwaters. There are vermiculated panels at the springing of the arches and similar oval panels in the spandrels. A band decorated with a Vitruvian scroll motif runs along the base of the parapet. Although the original vase-balustrade has been replaced by a simple steel railing, the intermediate piers remain intact. At both ends, the bridge flares out to end in squat octagonal piers, each topped with a large urn that has a fluted base and a gadrooned cap.
