Description
The garden wall, railings, gate, and gate posts in front of Number 20, Cumberland House, date from around 1840, with some later alterations. The boundary features a red brick wall, constructed partly in English garden-wall bond and partly in random brick. The low section of the wall has a cambered stone coping, while the higher section has soldier brick coping. The railings, gates, and gate posts are made of cast iron. The wall varies in height, with one part approximately 0.75 metres high and another part about 1.75 metres high, which is set back to form a recessed bay closed by horizontal railings. The wall railings are turned and topped with onion finials, and the gates match the railings and include dog bars. The gate posts are raised on tall square-section pedestals, are turned, and feature bulbous bases along with ball and pedestal finials. This structure is included for its group value as an integral part of Number 20, Cumberland House.
