Description

This is a house, built around 1845 to 1850, and now used as a shop and offices. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof. Number 42, on the left, is a single-bay property. The ground floor has a casement window with lower sashes containing openings below a fixed upper section with small panes and margin lights. The first floor has a similar casement window. A doorcase with panelled pilasters, console brackets, a cornice, and panelled reveals stands to the right, now holding a 20th-century door with six raised and fielded panels, and a plain rectangular overlight. Beside the doorcase is a glazing bar sash window on the first floor, above a timber shopfront. This shopfront features a continuous entablature with a dentilled cornice and pilasters with sunken panels. Two pilasters face Holgate Road, and a window set across the corner angle on the right likely replaced a former door. The shopfront continues along the return wall facing Mount Ephraim, having four pilasters. Above this, on the first floor, are three glazing bar sashes; the right-hand one has a 2 over 6 pane configuration. A shared chimney is located to the left of Number 42, with a second chimney situated to the right, in front of the roof ridge. The interior has not been inspected.
