Description
The University College of Ripon and York St John Drama Studio, originally a chapel built around 1858 and converted around 1964, features a Gothic Revival style. The building is constructed from coursed rusticated stone set on moulded and chamfered plinths, with intermediate and diagonal buttresses. It has ashlar dressings and a steeply pitched slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods.
The structure consists of five bays, with a south transept and entrances on the north and south sides. The east window comprises five trefoiled lights with curvilinear tracery beneath a coved hoodmould. The north and south sides are buttressed between the bays, with the south side interrupted by a gabled transept. The north and south doors are boarded, featuring foliated C-hinges within 2-centred arches of three moulded orders, topped by rounded triangular lights filled with mouchettes. There is a blocked doorway in the east return of the transept. The nave windows have paired trefoil-headed lights with traceried 2-centred heads. The west window consists of three trefoiled lights with a traceried 2-centred head and a coved hoodmould above, featuring a glazed trefoil in a rounded triangular surround at the gable apex. A moulded sillstring encircles the building, rising over all doorways to form a moulded hood that steps beneath the west window. The openings are chamfered, and the windows have relieving arches made of voussoirs. The interior has not been inspected.
