Description
The Church of St John is a Gothic Revival church built in 1848. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a plinth. The church features buttresses and a pitched slate roof with gable copings. It has north and south transepts, with the south transept topped by a three-tier square tower. The lower chancel is present, while the nave consists of four bays on the north side and five bays on the south side, each side having a doorway, with the south entrance located in a stone porch. The windows are predominantly two-light with traceried heads, some of which contain stained glass. The north transept has two bays with similar windows, and its north window is a three-light design with stained glass. The tower has three tiers, featuring a bell chamber with a pair of two-light traceried and louvered lights on each side. There is a five-sided stair turret on the east side at the first tier level. The chancel has two bays with windows similar to those in the nave, and the east window is a four-light design with tracery and stained glass. Inside, there is a chancel arch, and the roof trusses are supported on engaged colonnettes.
