Description

This is a school building, now part of the University College of Ripon and York St John, dating from 1846, with a later 19th-century extension. It was designed by GT Andrews for the York and Ripon Diocesan Boards of Education. The building is constructed of orange-grey brick in English bond, with a chamfered stone plinth band and stone dressings. It has timber guttering on timber modillions and slate roofs with moulded stone copings and brick stacks, some set diagonally. Dormers are weatherboarded with slate roofs and feature windows with paired, shouldered, 8-pane casements. Box dormers have also been inserted. The style is Gothic Revival.

The two-storey front features a twelve-window main range, a three-window wing projecting to the left, and a gabled crosswing to the right. An entrance is centrally located on the inner return of the left wing, accessed via a four-centred arched doorway with a recessed, glazed and panelled door within a glazed screen, topped by a tall, four-light overlight. A two-light window sits above the door. The projecting left wing and gable end of the crosswing have two-storey square bay windows with half-hipped roofs – the ground floor windows have three lights and the first floor windows two lights, with segment-headed windows in the gable apex. The main range features three-light, 12-pane sash windows with segmental heads on the ground floor, with four 20th-century two-light windows inserted between. The first floor has single 8-pane casements. The left wing has a single gabled bay to the left of the front, with a square-headed ground floor window containing four mullioned and transomed sashes, a three-light, segment-headed first floor window, and paired 2-light windows to the right. All windows have horizontal glazing bars. A moulded string course runs around the ground floor left window, extending across the main range and wings, before continuing over the right return. The rear of the main range has a glazed and panelled door with an overlight within a quoined, double-chamfered surround, and is approached by a flight of steps. The right return has two storeys and attics, with four windows and an external stack corbelled out from the first floor at the right end. A nail-studded, vertically ribbed door is set within a four-centred moulded arch on slender jamb shafts with moulded capitals, bases, and a hood. Ground floor windows are two- and three-light, segment-headed, with one transomed. First floor windows consist of three single-light 8-pane casements and one of paired similar lights. Window surrounds are square-headed, quoined and double-chamfered, with chamfered mullions and sloped sills. Most first-floor windows are 8-pane casements. The interior was not inspected.
