Description
A pair of cottages, now a house with an attached barn, railings, and gates, dating from the mid-18th century and converted around 1840, with later 19th-century additions. The building is constructed of painted brick with painted brick dressings and has pantile roofs, featuring a ridge stack and two gable stacks. The gables are raised and coped in brick. The north street front has a central doorway sheltered by a late 19th-century gabled porch, which has a slate roof, plain bargeboards, a pointed arched doorway containing a double half-glazed door and a pointed arched fanlight with margin lights. Single plate glass sash windows flank the porch, with smaller plate glass sashes above. A single-storey lean-to addition to the left connects the house to the attached barn. The barn has a 20th-century concrete tile roof with raised coped gables and kneelers, and two small casement windows to the eaves. The rear of the barn has two 20th-century doors and a plank loft door. The rear front includes an off-centre doorway with a pair of glazed doors under a 20th-century lean-to porch; to the left, a plate glass sash window and above it a similar smaller sash; to the right, a lean-to conservatory with a single glazed door and a brick band.
The interior features stop-chamfered spine beams, some original panel doors, and an early 19th-century staircase with a stick baluster rail leading to the landing; a back staircase has a ladder. The roof structure was replaced around 1969. A low brick garden wall is topped by early 19th-century spearhead iron railings with ornate flat decorative panels and circular gatepiers featuring ball finials and a spearhead gate, and a pair of large iron gates, also with circular gatepiers and ball finials, with a short stretch of spearhead railings to either side, are attached to the left of the barn.
