Description
The barn at Manor Farm is a structure dating from the 15th or 16th century, which was encased in brick in the 18th century. The east end was rebuilt and repairs were made in 1928. It features timber framing, a brick construction, and a pantile roof. This single-aisled barn consists of four and a half bays, with an entrance located in the second bay and an aisle to the north. The south facade has double board doors, a board pitching door to the fourth bay, and three rows of vents. The gable ends are raised and exhibit tumbling in.
Inside, there are jowled posts resting on padstones. Originally, the barn had straight three-way bracing, but the braces to the tie-beams are now missing. Visible mortices indicate where aisle ties were once located. The roof structure includes a collar and tie-beam design without a ridge, featuring two sets of through purlins with edge-halved, bridled scarf joints that are trenched into the backs of the principal rafters. Historical accounts suggest that Prince Rupert's troops were billeted here prior to the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. It is noted that several bays to the west were destroyed by fire in 1928.
