Description

This structure consists of a wall, gate, and gate piers located approximately 7 meters north-east of numbers 40-42 in York. The wall, gateway, and three gate piers were built around 1693. The wall is made of red-black brick laid in stretcher bond, featuring a stone plinth and stone coping. It is about 25 meters long and 2.6 meters high, topped with flat coping. The round-arched gateway has chamfered quoins and radiating voussoirs beneath a moulded open pediment, situated between plain brick pilaster piers. The gate itself is a 20th-century replacement. The outer gates have been bricked up between square-section piers that stand approximately 3.3 meters high, with defaced cornices and caps. These structures are the only remaining parts of Saltmarsh House, which was built in 1693 and demolished between 1828 and 1851.
