Description

28 and 30 St Andrewgate is a house located in York, dating from the mid-18th century. It was refronted and altered in the mid-19th century and underwent renovation in 1972. The front is made of pink-grey mottled brick laid in Flemish bond on a chamfered plinth, while the right side is finished in orange brick in stretcher bond. The house features a painted stone eaves cornice and a timber doorcase, topped with a tiled roof that has brick coping, kneelers, and a chimney stack.

The exterior consists of a two-storey, five-bay front. The central doorcase is flanked by fluted pilasters and topped with a dentil cornice on pelleted channelled consoles. The door itself has six fielded panels and is set beneath a fluted impost band and a radial-glazed fanlight with festooned rosettes in the spandrels. To the left, there are plank carriage house doors, each with six sunk panels, situated beneath a divided transom and a long timber lintel. At the far end, there is a four-panel door beneath a tall overlight and a flat arch. To the right of the central door, there are two 12-pane sash windows, and on the first floor, there are five similar windows, all with painted stone sills and flat arches made of orange gauged brick. A 19th-century boot scraper is located in a moulded niche to the right of the front door. A raised brick band of four courses runs to the first floor, interrupted by the carriage house lintel, and there is a pulvinated eaves cornice.

On the right return, there is a one-window gable wall that rises two storeys and has an attic, positioned to the left of a two-storey, one-window wing. The first floor of the gable wall features a Venetian window with a radial-glazed centre sash beneath a shaped arch made of gauged brick. Other windows are 12-pane sashes similar to those on the front, except for an inserted 2x6-pane Yorkshire sash in the attic. The interior has not been inspected.
