Description

The Cottage is a range of almshouses that has been converted into a single dwelling. It was built in 1730, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and the 20th century. The building was constructed for the Company of Merchant Taylors and features orange-brown mottled brick in English garden-wall bond on a low brick plinth, with a cogged brick cornice, a tiled roof, and brick ridge stacks.

The exterior is a single storey with an eight-window front. There is a three-panel door at the right end, which is accessed by stone steps. The left end has been altered and is linked to Merchant Taylors' Hall. The windows are primarily four-pane sash windows, except for two top-hung lights in altered openings that still have segmental brick arches. To the right of the center, there is an inscribed stone tablet that commemorates the construction of the Hospital by the Company in 1730, listing the names of the Master and Wardens. The interior has not been inspected.
