Description
Two houses, dating to circa 1770, were altered and subdivided in the mid-19th century and later converted in the 20th century. They are located at 33 and 35 St Saviourgate, York, and include the adjacent property at 10 Spen Lane. The houses are built of orange-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with dressings of orange gauged brick to the front. Timber doorcases and a cornice are present, along with a tiled roof and rebuilt brick stacks.
The front elevation is a three-storey, four-window design. The pilastered doorcases have enriched open pediment hoods supported by beaded consoles with wheatear drops and contain doors of raised and fielded panelling. Windows to number 33 are tripartite, featuring 1-pane sashes on the ground and first floors and squat sashes on the second floor. Number 35 has two 1-pane sashes on each side of the front door, and to the right of the first floor is a three-light canted bay with 1-pane sashes over panelled risers, topped with a modillion cornice. The second floor has five squat 1-pane sash windows. All windows, except for the canted bay, have flat brick arches and painted stone sills. A dentil and modillion cornice runs along the top, incorporating an inverted bell rainwater head initialled HFM to the left of the centre.
The right return displays a three-storey and attic gable end to Spen Lane. The doorcase is plain with a cornice hood on consoles and a door of six raised and fielded panels, with a divided overlight. Windows, with the exception of a four-pane sash above the door, are 1-pane sashes, all with brick arches and painted stone sills.
The interior of the properties was not inspected.
