Description

No. 34 St Saviourgate is a house dating from the mid-15th century, with a third storey added in the 16th century. It was remodelled in the mid-18th century, and the left return was rebuilt in the 20th century. The building has a timber frame encased in brown brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring a timber doorcase and cornice. The roof is M-shaped and covered with pantiles, with two brick stacks located in the valley.

The exterior presents a three-storey, two-window front. The plain doorcase has a moulded cornice hood and a door made of six beaded panels beneath a divided overlight. The ground floor window is tripartite, featuring a 16-pane centre sash and a renewed stone sill. The first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills. The ground and first floor windows have cambered brick arches, while the second floor windows have one-course segmental arches. A four-course raised brick band is present at the second floor, along with a moulded modillion eaves cornice.

At the rear, there are two 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor and paired 12-pane sash windows on the first and second floors. The rear also features four-course raised brick bands at the first and second floors, and a brick eaves band with a rainwater head dated 1780 at the right end.

Inside, remnants of timber-framing can be seen in the left cross wall, as well as spine beams and joists on all floors. The staircase is noted for its slender spindles. The fireplace in the ground floor rear room has a heavy timber lintel, while the fireplace in the second floor rear room features a hob grate in a plain surround. The first floor rear room has a blocked ogee-headed doorway, and several six-panel doors remain throughout the house.
