Description

This is a substantial house, dated 1763, with alterations from the early 19th century and later additions. It was likely built for Marmaduke Fothergill. The front of the house is built of orange brick in a Flemish bond pattern, set upon a chamfered stone plinth. Painted stone window sills and bands are present, along with a timber doorcase and cornice. The left return is of red brick in a stretcher bond. The roof is tiled, with brick coping and stacks, including two-light dormer windows.

The house is three storeys and has an attic, with a three-window front. The doorcase features fluted, half-elliptical columns, a horizontally fluted frieze with lion mask angle blocks, and a flat cornice supported by paired palm leaf brackets. The front door has six raised and fielded panels and a radial fanlight above a transom. The transom is carved with Vitruvian scrolls, and the door is set within an architrave enriched with oak foliage. The ground and first floor windows are 12-pane sashes; the second floor windows are squat, 6-pane sashes, all with flat arches of gauged brick. The ground floor windows retain shutters of raised and fielded panels. Raised bands are present on the first and second floors. A dentil and modillion cornice incorporates a rainwater head embossed with winged cherub heads and the initials MF.

The interior retains an original staircase with turned balusters and mushroom knops. Good plaster cornices and enriched window and door surrounds are found throughout the building.
