Description
60 and 62 Aldwark is a Methodist chapel that has been converted into a dentist's surgery. It was built in 1759 and altered and extended around 1805 and later. The building is constructed of orange-grey brick in random bond on a brick plinth, topped with a hipped roof made of pantiles featuring corner scrolls and a brick chimney stack.
The exterior showcases a two-storey, three-bay front with a one-storey extension bay to the right. The extension has a 20th-century glazed door set in a shallow brick arch with two orders, accessed by steps with a cast-iron handrail. The main front has windows with 16 panes, stone sills, and segmental brick arches. The left side of the building is two storeys high with five bays and irregular window placement. Blocked round-arched openings indicate the original window layout, while the current windows are similar to those on the front.
Although the interior has not been inspected, the building holds historical significance as the first and, until 1805, the only Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in York. The opening service took place on July 15, 1759, conducted by John Wesley, and the building ceased to be used as a chapel in 1805.
