Description
The New River Ancholme Bridge is a road bridge built in 1827 by Sir John Rennie for the Commissioners of the Ancholme Drainage and Navigation. It was widened to the south in the 20th century, re-using the original south face. The bridge is constructed of ashlar with brick flanks at the abutments. It features a single span that accommodates a double carriageway width, with the abutments splayed out at the entrances. Both the north and south faces of the bridge are similar in design. The structure has a segmental arch with a carved bracketed keystone, a hood-mould, banded rustication on the spandrels, a moulded cornice, and a coped parapet. The abutments have broad moulded plinths and projecting piers that also feature plinths, moulded cornices, and coped upper sections, which are linked by coped parapets to smaller, similar outer piers. The north face is somewhat obscured by pipelines. This bridge is located in the parishes of Broughton and Glanford Brigg.
