Description
College Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the mid-18th century, with a 19th-century attic storey and bay window. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has a plan consisting of three rooms, with an entrance hall to the left and a rear outshut that contains back stairs. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features four bays, including a three-bay symmetrical entrance front to the left.
There are steps leading to the original six-panel door, which has four inserted glazed panels above two fielded panels, and a three-pane overlight in an architrave. This is topped by a painted ashlar hood with a moulded cornice supported by shaped brackets. The 19th-century plate-glass sash windows are set within original 18th-century flush wooden architraves that have projecting sills and painted rubbed brick flat arches. To the right, there is a flat-roofed ground-floor canted wooden bay window with pilasters, a plain frieze, and plate glass sashes. A two-course brick band runs at the former eaves level, with an end stack to the left and an axial stack to the right.
Inside, the main staircase is an open well design with a closed string, moulded handrail, plain newels, and column-on-vase balusters with square knops. There is also an open well back staircase featuring a balustrade that includes a single original panel of Chinese Chippendale fret, with the remainder being 20th-century replacements. The ground floor has an early 19th-century ribbed plaster cornice in the centre, a shelved alcove to the left, and six-fielded-panel doors leading to the hall.
