Description
The original portion of the Grammar School, located on Grammar School Road, dates back to 1674 when it was contracted by Sir John Nelthorpe and William Catlyn of Hull. The front elevation, which originally consisted of two bays, has been extended in 1878 by F H Goddard and Sons, as indicated by the date on the door. The original building features a single-storey hall constructed of red brick with stone quoins and a moulded brick plinth. It has a deep coved cornice and an old tile roof topped with 19th-century ridge tiles. The façade includes six windows with modern glazing. The entrance door is framed by a moulded stone round-headed architrave, featuring a small keystone adorned with a cherub's head. Brick pilasters with a plinth and Roman Ionic capitals in stone flank the entrance. Above the door, there is a central achievement of arms set in a stone frame, accompanied by an inscription that commemorates the foundation by Sir John Nelthorpe. A modern brick modillion pediment is positioned above this feature.
