Description

The Brigg War Memorial is situated on Monument Roundabout at the junction of Wrawby Street, Bigby Road, and Wrawby Road. Constructed from Portland Stone, it features an eternal flame atop a column, which is flanked by two reclining lions on pedestals.

The memorial has a rectangular two-stepped base with a central circle. Above this base is the column base, which has rounded buttress plinths at the front and rear. On either side of the column, rectangular pedestals support the carved lions. Each face of the pedestals includes grey granite panels with gilt lettering.

The column itself is square in plan and stands 7.3 meters tall. At its top, there is an intricately carved urn adorned with festoons, from which the eternal flame emerges.

The rounded buttress plinths feature incised inscriptions. On the front (west) side, the inscription reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BRIGG WHO DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 1939-1945." The rear inscription states: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED AND PRESENTED TO THE TOWN OF BRIGG BY COUNCILLOR HENRY STAMP, JP., C.C., CHAIRMAN OF THE URBAN COUNCIL 1915-1919, UNVEILED BY MRS STAMP SUNDAY JUNE 15TH 1919." Above each inscription, the cornice is decorated with a cartouche displaying the town badge.

On the western side of the memorial, granite panels list the names of the fallen under the headings "ROLL OF HONOUR ROYAL NAVY (NAMES) ARMY (NAMES)" and "ROLL OF HONOUR ARMY (NAMES)." The eastern side features a southern panel that records names, primarily from the Second World War, under the heading "ROLL OF HONOUR (NAMES)," while the northern panel bears the inscription: "OH VALIANT HEARTS, WHO TO YOUR GLORY CAME THROUGH DUST OF CONFLICT AND THROUGH BATTLE FLAME, TRANQUIL YOU LIE, YOUR KNIGHTLY VIRTUE PROVED, YOUR MEMORY HALLOWED IN THE LAND YOU LOVED."
