Description

The Windmill Public House is a public house built around 1870, with a ground floor remodelled around 1900. It is constructed of brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a faience shop front, topped with a hipped and gabled slate roof and a wooden modillion cornice. The building stands three storeys tall and has six windows across the front and four on the side. It is situated on a corner site with a rounded entrance bay.

The upper windows are plain sashes, while the rounded corner entrance bay features a segment-headed first floor window with a keystone, flanked by six similar windows on the left and four on the right. The upper level also has similar windows with flat heads, a cornice, and brackets. The ground floor showcases a continuous faience shop front divided by Ionic columns beneath a modillion cornice, with the hotel's name displayed on the frieze. There are four round-arched doorways, although the corner door has been altered to a window. Each doorway is topped with a scrolled pediment and a relief model of a windmill, and the shop front includes plate-glass windows with toplights.

On the left side, facing Canning Street, there are four bays with two faience panels adorned with festoons. On either side of the panels, there are dummy doorways with shell heads and flanking pilasters that extend above the cornice, ending in ball finials.

Inside, the public house has combined bars and retains original plaster ceilings and strapwork friezes. There are some original fitted benches with bell pushes on the dado rail and three original part-glazed doors.
