Description
New North Bridge is a walking bascule bridge that spans the River Hull, built between 1928 and 1931. It was designed by T Thomas, the City Engineer, and constructed by Widnes Foundry (1925) Ltd. The bridge is made of reinforced concrete and features a riveted steel lattice girder lifting span, along with cast-steel roller racks. On either side of the footway, there are wrought-iron latticework balustrades. The windows are steel-framed casements.
On the east side, the bridge has concrete control cabins and machine rooms that extend over the road, topped with flat concrete roofs and coped balustrades. At the center, there is a semicircular arch that is flattened at the top, featuring an exaggerated keyblock that extends upwards to form a clock tower. Hinged covers for the racks are located on either side, and there is a square control cabin on the first floor with three windows. Above this, another room with three similar windows is flanked by sloping parapets. Below, the tiled footway has shouldered openings, with the north opening containing three unglazed windows and the south opening featuring four larger windows. At the rear, there is a late 20th-century oriel window on the control cabin's south side. Exposed pinions that project from the machine rooms engage with straight racks to operate the bridge, which remains complete and in use.
