Description
1 and 2 The Oval are a pair of houses built between 1907 and 1908, designed by Runton & Barry for the Garden Village (Hull) Ltd. They are constructed of brick, rendered and colourwashed, featuring hipped plain tile roofs with two side wall stacks, a single ridge stack, and a single rear wall stack. The houses have deep eaves supported by curved metal gutter brackets.
The buildings are two storeys high and have a four-window range. The windows are primarily two- and three-light wooden casements with leaded glazing. In the center, there is a catslide roof with two box dormers that have two-light windows. Below these dormers, there are two three-light windows. Each house has single hipped wings with three-light windows, and below these are canted hipped wooden bay windows with six lights.
The returns feature a projecting gabled entrance bay with a two-light window and a half-glazed door beneath a flat wooden hood supported by shaped brackets. Next to the entrance bay, there is an external stack that frames a single-light window. This building is part of the first phase of the Garden Village development, designed by Runton & Barry.
