Description

The Star Inn is a building of uncertain origin, likely dating to the 17th century, with alterations and additions through the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of masonry and brickwork of various dates, with the front rendered and painted. The roof is covered with pantiles. The building is two storeys high and has a rendered plinth. One gable end features tumbled brickwork. The windows are predominantly 18th century, with two rows of six-pane hung sashes and a single window above two pairs of windows, all with glazing bars. A doorcase from the early 19th century has grooved pilasters, an ornamented fascia, and a pedimented hood, incorporating decorative fake half-timbered ornament. The inn forms part of a group with numbers 7 to 31 (odd) and the Avenue Hospital, stables, and wall, and number 21 (including the former number 19) is of local interest.
