Description
West End House, located at No 29 Westgate, is a late 17th century building that has undergone some alterations. It stands three storeys tall and is rendered, featuring three chimney stacks. The building has a parapet and a moulded cornice, with vermiculated rusticated quoins and a plinth. There are four windows on the upper floors, each with shouldered surrounds, lintels that have vermiculated keystones, brackets under the cills, and cornices with pediment shaping and shoulders on the first floor. The ground floor has three windows that also feature shaped moulded cornices. The windows are later hung sashes with glazing bars. The doorway is framed by plain pilasters and an entablature, with a panelled soffit and jambs, and a rectangular fanlight above. To the right, there is a two-storey section with a Welsh slate roof, which includes a bow window without glazing bars above a hung sash window with glazing bars, all in a moulded surround. Some interior features are also noted. West End House is part of a group with Nos 7 to 31 (odd) and the Avenue Hospital, stables, and wall, while No 21 (including the former No 19) is of local interest.
